Águilas beaches: Playa Ensenada de la Fuente

This Águilas beach nestles under the imposing headland of Cabo Cope

Playa Ensenada de la Fuente lies within the pedanía of Cope, part of the Águilas municipality, an area of the coastline which enjoys low occupancy simply because there are so many beaches along this 28 kilometre stretch of 36 beaches which are either closer to main population centres or have easier access.  There are several options in this area and if the neighbouring beach of Playa de Cope receives few visitors, then Playa Ensenada de la Fuente probably receives even fewer!

This is not, however, because it is any way inferior: both beaches are stony or pebbly rather than sandy, neither enjoys any special facilities or services, and both are washed by the clear water of this part of the Mediterranean. However, while the Playa de Cope is right next to the RM-15 road, in order to get to the 85-metres of stony beach of Ensenada de la Fuente a small detour off the beaten track is required, heading past the ruined chapel which remains as a reminder of the days when only a few fishermen and shepherds inhabited this part of the Águilas coastline.

This detour is not well marked, and involves turning right when you arrive from Águilas at the Torre de Cope, the watchtower which was built in the sixteenth century to warn inhabitants of the imminent arrival of Berber raiders from north Africa.

Playa de Cope and Ensenada de la Fuente are by no means the best cared for or the best equipped of the beaches of Águilas, and neither are there any shops, beach bars or other facilities in the vicinity: for all of these it is best to head east over the ridge of the isthmus which connects Cabo Cope to the mainland and visit the town of Calabardina. However, on days when the shoreline is clear of seaweed a quick dip in the clear water of the Mediterranean is an attractive proposition during a sightseeing tour of this undeveloped part of the municipality of Águilas.

This is the twenty fifth beach in the series of 36 Águilas beaches which run along the 28 kilometres of Águilas coast, working from the Almería coastline in the west down to the Lorca municipality and offer both urban and wild beaches.
