Casas Consistoriales, the Town Hall of Mazarron
Sala de exposiciones Casas Consistoriales Mazarrón
The construction of the building began on July 9 1889 with Francisco de Ródenas as the architect although two years later the project was taken over by the architect Francisco de Paula y Oliver, who was working in Cartagena although originally from Catalunya.
This time was the era of greatest productivity in the Mazarrón mines, at a time when the town had 40,000 inhabitants and a wealthy middle class.
The building is in the late 19th century Modernist style and the interior is particularly noteworthy: the Salón de Actos is a magnificent room and well worth climbing up the stairs for!
The former Mayor's office is still used for special occasions, although its main function today is as an exhibition space. There are two main exhibition areas, namely the basement, an atmospheric and intimate area, and the upper floor, which has an external terrace.
The building was declared a Monumento Histórico Artístico Nacional in 1980. It is normally open to the public only when exhibitions are being held.
There are steep main entry steps, although a lift is also available once inside the building.
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 10.00am to 2.00pm, Thursday and Friday evenings 5.00pm to 8.00pm.
Location: Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Mazarrón
