Ten days of music, costumes and satirical humour as Cádiz transforms into one giant street party
The Carnival of Cádiz is one of Spain's most famous festivals and for ten days in February the entire city transforms into a vibrant stage of music, humour, costumes and satire.
Declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest, it draws thousands of visitors each year who come to experience the unique wit and charm of the people of Cádiz.
This isn't just a party but a cultural phenomenon that blends tradition, social commentary and artistic talent. From the theatres to the streets, every corner pulses with that electric festive spirit that has made Cádiz Carnival famous worldwide.
Key dates for Cádiz Carnival 2026
- Thursday February 12: Carnival begins
- Friday February 13: Grand Final of the COAC (Official Carnival Groups Competition) at the Gran Teatro Falla, featuring the best chirigotas, comparsas, choirs and quartets of the year
- Saturday February 14: Opening ceremony in Plaza de San Antonio with comedian Manu Sánchez as the official herald
- Sunday February 15: Grand Parade through the main streets plus Sunday of choirs with street performances
- Monday February 16: Monday of choirs (local holiday) with more carnival tangos in the streets
- Throughout the week: Street competitions and groups performing in flamenco venues and squares across the historic centre
- February 20-22: Second weekend brings another massive influx of visitors for the carnival's grand finale
Gastronomic events
On February 8, the Gambada Popular happens at La Perla club at 1.30pm and the first-ever Chicharronada Popular takes place in Plaza de la Catedral, also at 1.30pm.
What makes it so special
During carnival, Cádiz becomes a giant open-air stage where there are no spectators, only performers. The first weekend is particularly lively with Saturday night festivities and the choir performances on Sunday and Monday. Street groups and flamenco venues fill every corner with songs and humour throughout the week before the second weekend brings another wave of celebrations.
