Irish man kills British woman and injures two others by driving onto pavement in Ibiza
Suspect was allegedly under the influence of “laughing gas” nitrous oxide, and has been jailed
A young British woman has died, another is in a critical condition and a third suffered minor injuries when they were struck by an all-terrain vehicle that veered onto the pavement alongside a beach in Sant Josep, Ibiza on Sunday morning.
The vehicle, a Jeep Wrangler, was being driven by a 29-year-old Irish man, who was arrested by Local Police after he failed a drugs test and they found evidence indicating that he had taken nitrous oxide, A.K.A. "laughing gas", moments before the accident.
He faces charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence of drugs, homicide by gross negligence, and causing injuries by gross negligence.
The following day, an investigating court in Ibiza ordered him to be remanded in custdy, the island's Superior Court of Justice (TSJIB) confirmed.
The incident occurred opposite Playa des Pouet, where Calle Cala de Bou turns into Carrer del Molí, right by the border with Sant Antoni, and the emergency services were alerted at 11.28 and sent three ambulances, two of them with doctors on board.
One of the victims, who was identified by police as Victoria M. M., died from her injuries after she had been taken by ambulance to the Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the hospital advised in a statement.
The other seriously injured woman was in intensive care there with multiple trauma injuries to her chest, abdomen, liver, spleen and pelvis.
The third woman, aged 23, was taken to Can Misses, from where she was discharged at 16.10 on Sunday, the health department for Ibiza and Formentera informed.
A local police spokesman said the events “will surely mark the lives of the families of these three friends forever, whose only intention that morning was to enjoy another day of their holidays on our island”.
The police promised a thorough investigation, and thanked all the emergency services involved, “as well as the members of the public who went out of their way to help and provide information in such a hard and complex situation”.
They also called on the government to set harsher punishments and properly regulate "products as serious and dangerous as nitrous oxide, which was allegedly a factor in the unfolding of today’s events”.
San Josep Local Police are continuing their enquiries in coordination with the Guardia Civil and emergency services.
Data is being extracted from the vehicle’s control unit in order to obtain “precise information about how it was being driven at the moment of the accident”, according to the town hall.
The local authority emphasised the importance of statements and images from the many witnesses and vehicles that were in the area at the time, and thanked the Local Police of neighbouring Sant Antoni, who were first on the scene, “for their rapid and effective collaboration”.
Police kept the busy road closed for about two hours while they took measurements and gathered evidence, and a tow truck took the vehicle away.
The accident happened just a few metres from where a tourist from Alicante was run over and killed in May by a business van driven by a man under the influence of alcohol.
Only a few days ago on August 26, two young British mums were run over by a taxi at 1.50am on the EI-600 road to Ibiza town in Sant Antoni.
They are both still in intensive care with multiple serious injuries but their condition is now said to be stable.
