It's nearly December but San Javier is already tackling summer heat in La Manga
Native trees and shade structures to cool public spaces and combat heat island effect
Even though December is rapidly approaching and many of us are starting to wrap up warm in the colder weather and think about the Christmas festivities, San Javier is getting a head start on the summer heat, launching projects to fight the urban heat island effect in La Manga del Mar Menor. The city council has secured around €156,625 from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility to roll out nature-based solutions across the strip, which is known for its narrow, densely built-up land surrounded by water.“La Manga faces a unique challenge,” explains a council spokesperson, “because of its compact layout, impermeable surfaces like asphalt and concrete, and limited greenery. These factors trap heat, making the area much hotter than surrounding natural spaces during the long, sunny summers.”
To cool things down, the plan includes revamping currently unused plots into inviting public spots with native trees and pergolas, as well as using paving materials that absorb less heat. Visitors and locals alike will benefit from these green spaces that offer natural shade and a refreshing retreat, especially during the hottest months.
The project is part of the Regional Plan for Sustainable Tourism and fits within the sub-project “San Javier Looking to the Sea,” aiming to boost climate resilience while enhancing livability. With summers growing warmer and energy use rising to combat the heat, local authorities see this move as essential to protect both residents and the delicate coastal environment.
The council emphasises, “We want to reclaim urban spaces through sustainability, offering shade, reducing temperatures and promoting outdoor enjoyment.”
