Murcia on Red Alert as torrential rain floods streets across the Region
AEMET raises the warning as up to 40 litres of rain could fall in an hour, with an EsAlert sent to Mar Menor towns, Cartagena and Mazarrón

What started as an orange weather warning this morning has now escalated dramatically, with the Murcia Region under a red alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms.
AEMET is warning of rainfall of up to 40 litres per square metre in just one hour, with all municipalities in the Region now covered by weather warnings. The heaviest conditions so far have been concentrated around the Campo de Cartagena, where some areas have already seen around 50 litres per square metre in an hour.
The situation has prompted an EsAlert emergency warning to be sent to residents in the Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón, urging people in affected areas to take care and follow official advice.
The first signs of trouble arrived around midday, with heavy rain developing across Cartagena and neighbouring areas. By early afternoon, the storm had intensified considerably.
The Rambla del Albujón area has recorded close to 50 litres per square metre in the space of an hour, with the heaviest rainfall between the village of Albujón and Pozo Estrecho. More than 10 litres had already been recorded in Fuente Álamo and Torre Pacheco.
¡Brutal! Sonido ON.

The Mar Menor area has also started to feel the effects, with streets in Los Alcázares becoming flooded as the rain continues.
In the city of Murcia, around 25 litres per square metre had been recorded, while the southern outskirts have been particularly badly affected. In San José de la Vega, water has built up on the streets and has started entering garages, while driving conditions have become increasingly difficult.
The 112 emergency service had received 40 calls linked to the rain by 2.15 pm. So far, none involved serious incidents.
Cartagena had activated a special emergency response earlier in the day, with Policía Local checking ramblas to make sure that people and vehicles were not left in the normally dry channels.
🚨Importante.

The Ayuntamiento has also been urging residents to take care, keep an eye on official information and avoid unnecessary risks.
With the worst conditions expected to continue through the afternoon, residents across the Region should be prepared for sudden flooding, particularly around ramblas and low-lying areas. AEMET's current warning period runs through the afternoon and early evening.
