November 14 Cantoria in concert in Alhama de Murcia
The ECOS ancient music festival brings to life the court of Catherine of Aragon at the church of San Lázaro in Alhama
The annual ECOS ancient music festival is once again being held at various venues in the Sierra Espuña area of the Region of Murcia this autumn, and the visit to Alhama features the return to Murcia of Cantoría, one of the most outstanding examples of a new generation of ancient musicians in Europe.
Founded in 2016, they have forged an international reputation for their carefully crafted recovery of the vocal repertoire of the Baroque and Renaissance period in the Iberian Peninsula, and in recent years they have toured the USA and appeared at Brighton and the Wigmore Hall in the UK.
Their concert in Alhama de Murcia is on Friday 14th November and starts at 21.00 in the parish church of San Lázaro Obispo. Tickets are priced at 5 and 10 euros plus costs and can be purchased online here.
The collection of music on the programme is entitled “Las Hijas de Isabel” and is related to two of the daughters of Isabel La Católica. One of whom was Catherine of Aragon. Among the composers featured are Juan del Encina (1468-1529), Claudin de Sermisy (1490 – 1562), Josquin Desprez (c. 1450-1521), Luis de Narváez (fl. 1526-1549), Mateo Flecha “El Viejo” (1481-1553) and, from England, Philip van Wilder and William Cornish.
Other concerts in the festival are being held in Totana, Mula, Librilla, Aledo and Pliego: click here for the full program.
