October 20 Free guided hike in Rambla de Cañar in the Bay of Mazarron
The spectacular 9-kilometre walk follows the floodwater channel from the mountains to the coast in Isla Plana
The PR-15 Tallante-Isla Plana walking route leads from the inland village of Tallante to the coast at Isla Plana and although during the summer it is almost always dry it is still a floodwater channel in times of heavy rain.
Moisture still lies in the ground, hence the abundance of bamboo reeds in the channel, and the scenery is spectacular due to the route running along the foot of the majestic Peñas Blancas, a distinctive white vertical escarpment which constitute the highest point in the municipality of Cartagena and which can be seen from many kilometres away.
This walk at the coastal end of the Rambla falls within the municipality of Cartagena but is very popular with visitors to the Mazarrón area, and this particular excursion on August 8 is being offered by the tourist office of Mazarrón.
The hike begins at 9.00, lasting approximately 3 hours, and registration is available online here or through the tourist office in Puerto de Mazarrón (telephone 968 594426, email oficinaturismomazarron@gmail.com).
The wearing of caps and sun cream is strongly recommended and participants should bring drinking water and appropriate footwear. Those registering must give ID details, and under no circumstances may people join without prior registration.
Note: pets are not welcome!
