Pozo del Cremós, Orihuela
19th century water deposit, the "Pozo del Cremós"
Walking along from the Iglesia de Santiago and Museum of the Reconquist, towards the Cathedral and town hall, visitors pass by a tiled water feature showing the Legend of the Armangola, the "Pozo del Cremós".
This marks the spot of a major 19th century hydraulics works, which was constructed to supply water to the town below from 2 wells drilled into the Monte de San Miguel.
Although the water works have now been abandoned, an artificial water feature has been built transferring wáter from natural rock down to the tiled fountain below, the lower section with seating and tiled depiction of the Legend of the Armangola, who allegedly saved the town from a plot to kill the Christian residents during the early part of the Christian Reconquist.
This links into the Museum of the Reconquist, just a few metres away, holding costumes worn by participants in the fiestas, the re-enactment of the legend one of the events recreated in the Moors and Christians fiestas.
There is a walkway alongside the Pozo del Cremós which links into the road leading up to the seminary and ultimately, the Moorish castle above it on the monte de San Miguel
Location:
Calle Francisco Die, plaza de Moros y Cristianos. Click for map, Pozo del Cremós
There is no parking below, the easiest place to park being in the Ociopea comercial centre and then walk through to the plaza and urban streets behind. From here, it’s possible to walk straight through behind the Palacio Rubalcava, turn right and the Pozo is right in front of you. No more than 5 minutes walk.
