In November 2023 the Town Hall of Jumilla proudly presented the official opening of the “Casa de la Música y Legado de las Artes” (literally the House of Music and Legacy of the Arts) in the building which was previously known as the former home of the noble Pérez de los Cobos family.
The inauguration took place on November 24 in honour of the feast day of Saint Cecilia, patron saint of musicians, and was followed by an opening concert featuring Roque Baños on saxophone and Pedro Valero on piano.
The Town Hall of Jumilla took possession of the iconic building back in 2009 and it has been lovingly restored over the intervening years. It’s now been transformed into a magnificent interpretive and flexible space dedicated to the historical, cultural and artistic legacy of Jumilla.
The palatial home was built by Francisco Pérez de los Cobos ‘El Rico’ and his wife Mariana de Cutillas-Torres in the late 16th century and the façade features Castilian window grilles, pent rooves and a coat of arms supported by lions rampant. Above the door is a cornice that which supports a pediment on which the Pérez de los Cobos coat of arms can be seen once again, looking out into the Calle Rico, named after the man responsible for the house (click for map).
The mansion’s last inhabitant was the Jumillan master composer Julián Santos, whose work now holds pride of place in the House of Music and Legacy of the Arts.
