The Town Hall in the Plaza Mayor of Yecla
A 16th century building is home to the Town Hall of Yecla
The main Town Hall building in Yecla is the building formerly known as the Concejo in the Plaza Mayor, the main square of the old town centre which also contains the tourist information office, the clock tower, the old grain store and the Palacio de los Alarcos.
The Town Hall building dates from the first half of the 16th century, and features a classical stone façade punctuated by two wide arches on Tuscan columns. Between the two columns is the imperial coat of arms of Carlos V, including the two-headed eagle.
Other interesting decorative items are the corner window and the sculpted figure of Hercules above it, dressed in the skin of the lion of Nemea and holding a shield decorated with a skull motif. Inside there is an attractive courtyard, and the adjoining tower, which stands between the Concejo and the Palacio de los Alarcos, was added in 1687.
Above the coat of arms is the coat of arms of Yecla, which has borne the words "Very Noble, Very Loyal and the most loyal villa of Yecla" since 1707. At the corner facing Calle Epifanio Ibáñez is a mullion opening onto ashlars and overlooking two streets, which remained walled up until 1960.
Inside there is a large hallway and a beautiful marble staircase with an iron railing, reaching three levels: semi-basement, mezzanine and noble floor. It is on this storey that the Mayor's office can be found, along with those of the different local political corporations.
Another important feature is the council chamber, which features is covered with 18th century wooden panelling, while the mezzanine houses municipal offices. The semi-basement, once a town hail, contains more council offices. The building was restored under the supervision of architect Justo Millán Espinosa in 1887.
