Your chance to shape Alhama de Murcia's future as budget opens to public vote

Neighbourhood meetings and an online platform will allow residents to put forward ideas and vote on future investment projects

Residents of Alhama de Murcia once again have the chance to decide how part of the municipal budget will be spent. The 2026-2027 public spending project is now underway, with €400,000 allocated to fund projects chosen by local residents.

The submission period opened on Tuesday May 5 and will run until May 25. Over the coming weeks, six meetings will be held to explain how the system works and gather ideas from residents. The first meeting takes place at Jardín del Palmeral in Alhama de Murcia.

The Councillor for Citizen Participation, Antonio José Caja, explained that residents can attend neighbourhood meetings and submit their proposals in person, via the electronic registry, or through the online portal created to make participation easier from home, so everyone can take part.

Participation is open to all registered residents aged 16 and over, and an information leaflet has been delivered to homes, outlining the timetable, the different stages of the process, and including a registration form.

Your chance to shape Alhama de Murcia's future as budget opens to public vote The programme includes a general fund of €175,000, alongside dedicated budgets for specific areas: €100,000 for education, €80,000 for outlying districts, €15,000 for women and equality projects, €15,000 for seniors, and €10,000 for diversity projects, so different parts of the community benefit from the funding.

First, local groups will help identify the strongest proposals. Council experts will then review each idea to make sure it is practical, affordable and legally viable before it goes to a public vote.

Residents will make the final decision through both in-person and online voting. The process will end on June 30 with a public vote count at Town Hall, where the winning projects will be announced.

The University of Murcia is supporting the process to help make sure it is fair, transparent and properly managed. The Town Hall is encouraging residents to get involved, submit ideas and help shape the future of the town.

Alhama de Murcia Tourist information office is located on the edge of the Plaza de la Constitución, just a few metres away from the underground car park and the Town hall of Alhama de Murcia.

The tourist office offers free guided audiotours in English which take visitors around the historical sites of interest in Alhama. These be loaned at any time, although allow an hour and a half to complete the tour, and when loaning the audio equipment visitors are asked to leave passports or ID cards with the tourist office.

The office also carries a full range of leaflets for the archaeological museum of Los Baños, which is built around the historic spa which gives Alhama its name, and the mountains of Sierra Espuña, which is also an important area within the municipality of Alhama. Areas such as El Berro and Gebas have a number of interesting routes which can be followed and there are several picnic areas and good walking routes within the Sierra Espuña natural park.

The tourist office also carries leaflets for the many cultural events and fiestas which take place in Alhama throughout the year, including Los Mayos, Semana Santa, Christmas,the Romería of La Candelaria and the Auto de los Reyes Magos in El Berro.
