Los Alcázares heading for record summer as tourist figures soar
The wide range of events and activities helps hotel occupany rates shoot up in Los Alcázares
Official data compiled by the Town Hall of Los Alcázares show that tourism in the municipality enjoyed a boom during the month of June and July, with record hotel occupancy figures reported as special events attracted more visitors to the shore of the Mar Menor than every before.
According to Councillor María José Díaz Aragón, the average hotel room occupancy rate in July reached 80 per cent (as opposed to 71 per cent in the same month last year), with some establishments such as Hotel Cristina, Apartamentos La Encarnación, La Minería and Margoysa reporting figures of as high as 90 per cent on average.
This is despite the fact that there are actually more hotel rooms available than in the summer of 2024 due to the opening of the new 52-room Aparthotel Punta Calera and the addition of 18 more rooms to Apartamentos La Encarnación.
Another measure of the increase in population this summer is that during the month as much as 24.4 tons more waste was collected by municipal services in July. While of course the presence of more rubbish is not in itself positive news, it does confirm that the number of people in Los Alcázares increased markedly!
Without a doubt, the rise in visitor numbers is due in large part to the wide and varied offer of cultural, sporing and leisure events and activities taking place in the municipality, among which last month were the Fan Futura festival, the free concert given by the Region of Murcia Symphony Orchestra on the beach and the live music at various venues during the month. These attracted large numbers of visitors, providing boosts to the local economy as a whole.
Meanwhile, hopes are high that this level of growth will be maintained when the August figures become available, with hotel occupancy currently running at around 90 per cent (again, according to the Councillor for Tourism) and the annual Semana Internacional de la Huerta y el Mar fiestas about to begin!
